BIM FOR SIMULATION AND VISUALIZATION: FUNCTIONAL SUBJECT
Factory Digital Mock-Up
DaimlerChrysler AG
Based on a 3D master model, digital reviews
take place every two weeks in a specially
equipped room - the “Power Wall.” The team
reviews the project for collisions, having
used MicroStation, InRoads, InRail, Digital
InterPlot, and other Bentley solutions. In a
virtual walkthrough, the FactoryDMU is
examined for faults or clashes. Each planner
receives an electronic printout with the coor-
dinates for modifications. This procedure con-
tinues through the start-up date so all factory
data will represent the as-built situation. ;
Inspired by the Bentley BIM concept, the
idea of the factory digital mock-up
(FactoryDMU) was developed, combining all
the disciplines required in factory planning
in the visualization process. This improves
the efficiency and quality of planning, thereby saving time and money. With one master
model being used by all the disciplines,
FacturyDMU avoids duplication of work,
reducing time and increasing quality. The
expected cost savings for the corrections on
site are about 30 to 50 percent.

Design Center Co Ltd
Design Center Co Ltd. (DCC) is an architec-
tural design company promoting high-effi-
ciency reinforced concrete housing construc-
tion in Japan. In this project, it designed con-
crete three-story houses with rooftop decks
in Hokkaido. The challenge was to offer them
at an attractive price - $50,000 to $80,000
less than market price.
The houses’ design, including thermal insulation and substantial building frames, is impor-
Also, the true texture and color of the building materials, as well as the details of the way
the tiles would be laid, arranged, and set for
the internal and external architectural
design, are shown. This rendering helps customers precisely visualize the completed
construction. In addition, placing plants and
furniture in the images effectively adds a better sense of what the end product will look
like at the completion of construction.
The presentations with MicroStation’s 3D
visualization capabilities helped prospective
buyers appreciate the design quality and
envision the proposed end-product. DCC
believes that these accurate representations
of the product they offer are as important as
the quality structures they design. As a result,
MicroStation is considered to be mission-crit-ical by the company. ;
