STUDENT COMPETITION: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
George’s House
Savannah College of Art and
Design
I tried to use a variety of tools on this project, and compare different ways to create
objects. This taught me not only to be concerned about creating a complex and
beautiful object, but also to select the best
and fastest tools to help the designer finish
a project on time.
I started this project with sketching a
schematic design by hand, and then created a 2D drawing in MicroStation. Concerns
about function and detail design were the
next step. Then I modeled a 3D object, and
assigned materials and lighting. Finally, I created interior objects for my model.
I learned a lot about the benefits
MicroStation offers designers. For instance, I
can use real solar studies to learn about shad-
ing, which can help me reach my goal of cre-
ating sustainable architecture. ;
STUDENT COMPETITION: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Wall Project
University of Texas at Arlington
A case study was made of Juan O’Gorman’s
house for Diego Rivera in Mexico. The study
focused on the proportions and entry
sequence as well as the structure. A bridge
connects Rivera’s house to his studio.
spaced using proportions
found in the structure of
Rivera’s house. The wall also
has a special place for a
sculpture, and that is seen in
the front shot of the project.
Art was incorporated into
the project, since the inspira-
tion came from an
artist’s house.
That idea was incorporated in this project, in
which a bridge seems to connect two distinct
proportionate masses of the wall. The wall
becomes an explorable space and has an
entry sequence of gateway, stairs, and a partly covered entry, as does the case study of
Rivera’s house.
MicroStation was
used to create the
3D model and
renderings. ;
The structure for the wall consists of simple
column and beam construction, and is
