STUDENT COMPETITION: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
The Quadrant
Singapore Polytechnic
The building form is inspired by the surrounding historical warehouses, with their
repetitive frontage leading to efficiency, standardization, and mass production.
Focus is given to the most significant public
space in the Quadrant— the communal design
library. This space will celebrate the amalgamation of activities showcasing contemporary
tropical design and its emphasis on architectural creativity and professionalism.
A modular system is used for its direct, simple
construction. All main structural members of
the building are of consistent modular sizes
for the efficient construction of a
post and beam system.
Overlooking the central space within the library are two interlocking
clusters of spaces. These create a
focal point, drawing attention to the
activities within and about it.
Sun-shading fins radiate along the
library façade. Sunlight is directed
and filtered by the fins into the
design library space, creating a playful symphony of light and shadow.
MicroStation and Bentley
Architecture software were used in
the design process for the creation
of the building form and spaces, and
study of the structural system.
Digital models were also used to
study the design of the fins’details. ;

SP Sport Complex
Grandstand
Singapore Polytechnic
The grandstand blueprints were given to us
so that we could become familiar with the
drawings and then generate a 4D model,
including fly-through, in more detail.
The fact that the grandstand had already been
built helped us show the association
between the details in the blueprints and the
details of the actual structure. Hand railings,
roof structure, and staircase structure were
minimally presented in the blueprints, making modeling more difficult.
The complications that we encountered
were not only in the detailing, but also in the
use of both Bentley MicroStation V8 and
MicroStation TriForma. The programs includ-
ed features that we had yet to learn and, thus,
couldn’t make full use of the software.
Fortunately, invaluable guidance was provid-
ed by our lecturer during the course of this
project and we finally managed to present
our final work on the grandstand. ;
