Plant Expansions
to model the turbine and generator island of
the plants. The designers were also able to
integrate the 3D models produced by the
boiler island supplier for piping and electri-
cal tray routings within the boiler island. 2D
construction drawings were extracted from
the models, and piping isometrics were pro-
duced using AutoISOGEN. The design team
and the owner used Bentley Navigator to
review and comment on the design, resulting
in significant savings by reducing costly field
changes.
Stanley Consultants, Inc.
Stanley Consultants is providing design and
construction management services on three
278-megawatt coal-fired electric generating
units for East Kentucky Power Cooperative.
When complete, each unit will produce
enough electricity to supply 20 cities with
15,000 residents.
Many efficiencies are being achieved from
the use of common design components as
well as the reuse and sharing of data among
the three designs. ;
At a cost of more than $400 million each,
both Units 3 and 4 will rank among America’s
cleanest coal-generating units. The units will
operate with a clean-coal technology known
as a circulating fluidized bed process.
Utilizing the same design and technology, the
$500 million Smith Unit 1 will be designed
on a new greenfield site.

Yazoo Backwater
Pumping Plant
Stanley Consultants, Inc.
The Yazoo Backwater Pumping Plant
(BWPP), a 14,000 cubic-feet-per-second facility, will be one of the largest pumping facilities of its kind in the world. It will provide a
pumped outlet for the Yazoo River when the
gates of the Steele Bayou structure are closed
during Mississippi River backwater flooding.
above the operating floor, including building
exterior, crane rail supports, building utilities,
and the interior and exterior architectural
treatments. In addition, it designed the service bay, which houses the hydronic heating
system, loading dock, and maintenance facilities.
3D visualization provided by Bentley
Navigator and MicroStationV8 helped the
design team identify interferences in the
design, during plant walk-through sessions,
that weren’t obvious on the 2D plans. The 3D
view also conveyed the design more clearly
than traditional enlarged plans and details.
Moreover, the software facilitated coordina-
tion of the design between the three distinct
design teams. ;
At full capacity, it will pump 6,300,000 gallons per minute, equivalent to the flow of the
Colorado River at the Grand Canyon. The
$191 million Yazoo Backwater Area Project
will provide flood protection for an area
encompassing 630,000 acres, about the size
of Rhode Island.
