that software was not effective or efficient.As
a result, HATCH completed the plant design
in Bentley software and wrote an application
to convert its virtual Bentley plant into an
intelligent Solid Edge equivalent. 3D designers had to register all their Bentley 3D models through a custom interface. Every evening
the system determined which models had
changed and converted them.
3D models enabled the client to review the
conceptual, but realistic, models long before
fabrication and construction commenced.
This shifted most of the client change
requests to the beginning of the design
phase, when it is easier and less expensive to
make changes. ;
Project requirements included: structural
steel, 9,000 tons; concrete, 31,000 cubic
meters; piping, 42km; fiber class piping, 7km;
excavation,330,000 cubic meters;ground fill,
390,000 cubic meters; cables, 375 km; cable
racks, 18km; and instruments, 3,780.
The client required delivery of a Solid Edge
model of the plant. However, modeling in

construction, manufacturing, procurement,
installation, and commissioning of four
500MW standardized coal fired power plants

The 3D models the firm created using
Bentley technology have changed the way
plant designs are now presented to clients,
and increased the accuracy of the informa-
tion. The database-linked 3D models offer
visualization and simulation tools that plant
design engineers, constructors, and opera-
tions people can put to good use throughout
the plant lifecycle.
The models were checked for clashes and
updated, and each change was tracked and
