The goal of the project was to ensure the
compatibility of Total’s geographic data
across country borders, as well as to securely
share map repositories using synchronized
processes to reach maximum productivity in
a minimum period of time.
Upstream in the exploration and production
process, cartographers, topographers, and
technicians work together to supply geologic
maps that include all types of information –
legal, satellite, seismic, topographic, and so on
– for the geologists and geophysicists. Gas well
estimates, pipelines, and drilling surveys depend
upon the correct reading of these maps.
The project involved setting up an intranet to
enable communication among the 30 or 40
Total subsidiaries around the world. Today,
40,000 maps have been put into the system.
This intranet, which is based on a
Project Wise managed environment, is totally
secure. From the interface, it is possible to
visualize earth and to zoom in on a region
with detailed maps that include crest lines
and topological information: geologic layers,
rivers, wells, exploration data, and so on.
Functions include queries, search, visualization, and GeoGraphics on-the-fly transformation, in a common format for all subsidiaries.
History management and versioning enable Total
to archive large- and short-scale estimates. ;
